Breeding
A maternal mouthbrooder: the male displays over a spawning site and the female carries the eggs and fry in her mouth for about three weeks. Breeding is easy in a well-kept tank with several females per male.
Good to know
Males can be aggressive towards each other and towards similar-looking red species, so keep only one male unless the tank is large. Many trade fish are hybrids or line-bred strains, and the name is often confused with Aulonocara 'Eureka Red' peacocks.
