Juveniles have a tall sail-like dorsal fin and bold dark vertical bands on a pale brown body, which makes them a striking and popular buy. As they grow the body lengthens, the fin becomes less dramatic and adults turn a plainer reddish or dark colour. They are calm, cool-water grazers that suit large ponds and very big aquaria.

Breeding

In the wild it migrates upstream to spawn over gravel in fast-flowing rivers. Captive breeding in home aquaria is essentially unknown, though it is bred with hormone induction in Chinese hatcheries for restocking.

Good to know

Often sold small but can exceed 100 cm in the wild, so it outgrows almost all home aquaria and is better suited to large ponds. It is a nationally protected species in China and listed as vulnerable, so check local rules before buying.
