A thick-lipped reef grunt with bold black and silvery horizontal stripes and yellowish fins as an adult. Juveniles are sold small and look attractive as they wiggle around, but they change pattern as they grow. Large public and private reef-fish systems keep it because it stays calm and has a striking look.

Breeding

It scatters eggs in open water and has pelagic larvae. It has not been bred in home aquariums.

Good to know

It grows far larger than the small juveniles on sale suggest, so plan for a very large tank. Small juveniles often refuse food and die, and the adults will eat small crustaceans and fish.
