A medium-sized freshwater stingray with a round brown disc covered in small yellow to orange spots, giving some lines a striking golden look. Keepers value it for its colour and calm nature, and it stays smaller than many other Potamotrygon species.

Breeding

Like all river stingrays it gives birth to live pups after internal fertilisation, with litters of a few young. It is bred in captivity by specialists, but this needs a large, very clean system and well-conditioned adults.

Good to know

Has a venomous tail spine that can cause very painful wounds, so handle with great care; needs a wide tank with soft sand and excellent filtration. Keeping or importing freshwater stingrays is restricted or banned in some places, so check local rules.
