A small, slender tetra with a broad dark stripe running along the body, edged above with a bright red to orange band that colours up strongly in soft, acidic water. It is kept for its shoaling behaviour and warm colours, and suits planted community tanks with other small, calm fish.

Breeding
An egg scatterer that spawns among fine-leaved plants or moss and gives no parental care, so adults will eat the eggs. Breeding is fairly straightforward in a separate soft, acidic tank with dim lighting, and the tiny fry need infusoria at first.
Good to know
Often confused with other red-lined Hyphessobrycon species in shipments, so check identity with the seller. Keep away from large or fin-nipping tankmates because of its small size.
