Breeding
In the wild it migrates to spawn over gravel beds in big rivers during the cool dry season. It is bred in hatcheries in Thailand using hormone induction, but breeding in a home aquarium is not realistic.
Good to know
Grows to well over a metre in the wild and needs a huge tank or pond, so juveniles sold as small fish quickly outgrow ordinary aquariums. It is listed on CITES Appendix I and assessed as Critically Endangered, so international trade in wild fish is banned and legal paperwork should be checked.
