This is a slim, pike-like characin from Peru. It has a dark line running through the eye and reddish tints on the fins, and males are the more colourful sex. Keepers like it as a calm surface dweller for soft-water planted tanks with floating plants.

Breeding
Pairs lay eggs on broad leaves or smooth surfaces, and the male guards and fans them until they hatch. It has been bred in soft, acidic water, but this is not commonly done.
Good to know
It is a skilled jumper, so the tank needs a tight-fitting lid. It is often confused with other Pyrrhulina species and may be sold under the wrong name.
